Observing the battle field, and perhaps fighting at its heart, the martial artist sees the struggles of all those who fight around him, friend and foe alike. Exercising his will over the narrative of battle, he subtly increases their opportunities for greatness by markedly increasing the greatness of the challenges they face. Killing blows are narrowly escaped, and impossible attacks succeed by the narrowest margin, all increasing the intensity and drama of the moment, and advancing the Narrative of Escalation.

During the tick when Hardship Vanquishing Grace is activated, no character can fail a roll, except in the case of a botch. All failed rolls automatically succeed with threshold successes equal to the scene’s Escalation Level. Botched rolls are handled as normal, but the consequences of the botch should be increased as if a number of additional ones had been rolled equal to the scene’s escalation rating. Additionally, attacks against the martial artist’s allies during the tick cannot succeed by a threshold greater than the scene’s current Escalation Level.

If at any time during the duration of the effect an action succeeds with threshold successes greater than the current Escalation Level, increase the scene’s Escalation Level by one. No effect or combination of effects can cause the scene’s Escalation Level to increase more than once before the DV of the character with narrative control of the scene refreshes.

This charm may be activated at any time, but only if the scene’s Escalation Level is one or greater. Its effects persist for a single tick, and the charm cannot be activated again until after the next time the martial artist’s DV refreshes.
